How We Calculate Your Take-Home Pay

See the formula behind every result
  • Start with gross annual salary. Enter your total yearly pay before any deductions. The calculator uses this as the baseline for all tax computations.
  • Subtract pre-tax deductions. Optional deductions like 401(k) contributions, HSA/FSA deposits, and health insurance premiums are subtracted from gross pay before taxes are applied, lowering your taxable income.
  • Apply federal, FICA, and state taxes. Using your filing status and state, we apply the 2026 federal income tax brackets, the standard deduction, Social Security and Medicare (FICA) rates, and your state's specific income tax rules. The result is your estimated annual take-home pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are NetPayTools's salary calculations?

Our calculators apply the exact 2026 federal income tax brackets, standard deduction amounts, FICA rates, and state-specific tax tables. Results are estimates based on standard deductions and do not account for itemized deductions, tax credits, local taxes, or individual circumstances. For authoritative guidance, consult a qualified tax professional or the IRS.

Which states have no income tax?

Nine states currently have no state income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. If you live and work in one of these states, your take-home pay will be higher than in states with income tax.

What is FICA and how is it calculated?

FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) includes Social Security and Medicare taxes. For 2026, Social Security is 6.2% on wages up to $176,100. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, with an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% on earnings over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

How is take-home pay different from gross salary?

Your gross salary is your total compensation before any deductions. Take-home pay (also called net pay) is what you actually receive after federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions or health insurance premiums are withheld.

Can I use these calculators for hourly wages?

Yes. The Hourly to Salary Calculator converts your hourly rate to an annual equivalent. The Salary Calculator also accepts annualized hourly inputs. Enter your hourly wage and hours per week and the calculator will compute your annual gross salary and full tax breakdown.
